lanning Design Studio (PDS) staff provided complete services from master planning, final design/CD’s to construction period services for River Des Peres regional greenway system. The River Des Peres is a channelized river draining about a quarter of the St. Louis City and County metropolitan area. It empties into the Mississippi River in south St. Louis and has watersheds that extend into University City, Creve Coeur, and Kirkwood. The study objectives include developing a community-supported vision of transforming the river from an “eyesore” into a community resource that links ten river miles between the Mississippi and Forest Park. The first phase of River Des Peres Greenway development was completed in late 2005. Improvements included trails, trailhead, parking, pedestrian bridges, plaza areas with lighting, street crossings with pedestrian signals and landscape plantings. The beautification plan identifies five distinct zones along the river and classified them according to their existing conditions and opportunities. Issues impacting plan development include flooding, water quality, pollution, trail linkages; and neighborhood character. The plan incorporates three improvement concepts of an urban greenway/recreation corridor, habitat restoration, and buffer/screening treatment.
