Washington University Forsyth Pedestrian Bridge Master Plan
Clayton, Missouri
Planning Design Studio, with the URS Corporation, was selected by Washington University in St. Louis, to design a bridge to replace the existing concrete structure carrying Forsyth Boulevard over a pedestrian access route. One unique aspect of the project site was its use as a free expression venue for student organizations in the form of ad-hoc graphic painting on the walls of the existing bridge.
After an analysis of the site conditions and project requirements, the scope of the project was expanded to include redesign of an adjacent folly structure plaza which also accommodates expressive student painting. A new student gathering area on the south side of the project was added to the project. The new project will accommodate not only the needs of the student organizations, but it will solve functional issues which have plagued the area since it’s use has evolved from a simple pedestrian bridge to a platform for spontaneous communication and creativity.
The design team was also responsible for continuing design development and completion of all construction documents.
