Chouteau Island Master Plan

Madison County, Illinois

The area known as Chouteau Island is actually comprised of three islands (Mosenthein, Gabaret and Chouteau) located in the Mississippi River north of downtown St. Louis and south of the confluence with the Missouri River. Totaling 6,000 acres and stretching seven miles long, the islands are part of a regional open space corridor known as the Confluence Greenway. The Chouteau Island long range master plan included the development of an extensive network of over 60 miles of various types of trails. Additional plan features included visual preservation zones, a visitor’s station linked to the Great Rivers Resource Center across the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, extensive ecological restoration, passive recreation activities and a natural landscape of 2,400 acres of restored wetlands, woodland and prairie ecosystems.

The restoration projects will provide enhanced habitat, additional natural water purification, soil stabilization, increased recreation opportunities, living classrooms, increased interpretive learning, enhanced biodiversity, and improved views and vistas.  Planning services were performed by PDS staff while employees of Parsons, the planning firm of record.
