Chouteau Island extends seven miles along the Mississippi River just north of downtown St. Louis.  The long range master plan for the area recommends an extensive network of over 60 miles of trails throughout the three adjacent islands (Mosenthein, Gabaret and Chouteau).

The plan includes ecological restoration of over 2,400 acres of wetlands, woodlands and prairie.  This environmental restoration enhances wildlife habitat, creates natural water purification systems, and stabilizes soil from potential erosion.

Although some areas are designated as visual preservation zones, the islands provide plenty of opportunities for people to convene with nature through interpretive learning areas, living classrooms, and outdoor recreational space.
