Edgar M. Queeny Park is a 529-acre regional park system that includes natural environment areas, a recreation complex and a historic house. Planning Design Studio staff led a team in creating a 20-year visioning study for the park and recreation complex. The study analyzed the existing natural systems and recreational facilities, and considered the evolving needs of surrounding neighborhoods and the 278,000 people living within a five mile radius of the park.
The plan included an extensive public involvement process with four public meetings. In response to public input, the master plan focused on preservation of the park’s unique natural setting, restoring and preserving habitat, and providing interpretive facilities that blend education and recreation. These include nature trails, bird watching facilities, a garden area, and greenhouses with seasonal displays.
The master plan also ensures the continuation of valued recreation opportunities, including picnic areas, equestrian facilities, sand volleyball courts and comfort stations.
