This 11-mile project, extending from Forest Park to the Mississippi River along the River des Peres, was the Great Rivers Greenway District’s pilot greenway project.  The planning process evolved from a small beautification plan into a visionary transformation that turns this generic corridor into a valuable community resource.  As a pilot project for GRG, this project also established the design criteria for all of the District’s future development projects.

The greenway’s elegant design includes picturesque pedestrian bridges, resting plazas, thoughtful landscape plantings and a distinctive wave pavement design. The plan improved regional sustainability by implementing environmental restoration for the channelized river, which collects rainwater from 115 square miles of the St. Louis metropolitan area. We addressed pedestrian safety and convenience through trailhead parking areas and signalized street crossings.
