Continuing a relationship that has lasted over two decades, Planning Design Studio staff developed an extensive revitalization master plan for the Alton Riverfront and Marina District for the city of Alton. The design and implementation of over $30 million in redevelopment projects have boosted economic development and transformed the city into a tourist destination.

Drawing on input from a public participation program, the project’s design reflects Alton’s historic 19th century river town heritage. A river-walk promenade, amphitheater and public fountain plaza make the riverfront an easily accessible outdoor destination for the city. Pavilions, parks, decorative walkways and a pedestrian bridge connecting to downtown provide recreation opportunities and increase the city’s walkability.

In addition, PDS staff conducted a feasibility study and developer selection for a 300-slip marina and excursion boat mooring, making the city a nautical destination. Finally, PDS staff created design guidelines to ensure all future development will blend with the project’s cohesive aesthetic.
