The City of Cape Girardeau owns and operates Capaha Field, home to ballgames for Southeast Missouri State University, the amateur Capaha baseball team, and a new collegiate wood bat team—the Catfish. Planning Design Studio teamed with the city to plan for future development to the ballfield.
The city, along with managers of the ball teams, wanted to focus the design on creating a fun and diverse experience for fans during ballgames. The design was to focus on creating varied seating options for fans – such as improving the existing grandstands to building a new homerun deck, organizing spaces for food and vending, and making the pathways to these places fully accessible.
During the course of work, PDS developed an overall master plan for the field, 3D models of fan seating options, parking lot layouts, design drawings for the first phase of improvements, and recommendations for site materials and furnishings.
Wanting to create a fun sense of place that was connected to the long history of the ballfield (founded in 1894), the city had PDS design a vintage-looking logo and wayfinding signs for the ballfield.
Construction for the first phase of work has begun, which will bring in a new home run deck, fencing, entry plazas, a food truck area and accessibility improvements.
