In 2022, Lake Land College hired Planning Design Studio (PDS) to resolve a number of challenges in their campus landscape. The college felt that their landscape planting needed of a fresh look. The campus landscape had become full of overgrown plants, had a general feeling of disarray, and was becoming a burden to maintain. In addition, poor site wayfinding and confusing traffic patterns were frequent complaints from students and staff. PDS addressed these issues through the following strategies:
-
Simplifying the traffic pattern by redesigning confusing intersections, as well as proposing new roads and entrances into campus.
-
Designing new signage and landscaping at the main entries.
-
Setting up a hierarchy of traffic flow (collector roads vs. parking lot drives).
-
Organizing the landscape into types (native landscape, highly manicured planting beds, open lawn with trees).
-
Recommending clear wayfinding signs and sculptures to aid in orientation
-
Focusing on the pedestrian experience throughout campus; closing sidewalk gaps, creating large gathering spaces, and proposing areas for small study nodes.
